On November 2nd, 2022, the lecture "Critical Evaluation and Development Direction of Thirty Years of Diplomatic Relations between China and Korea" of the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies was successfully held at Jilin University. The lecture was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, the Institute of North and South Korean Studies of Jilin University, and the Special Committee for Northeast Asian Regional Studies, Academic Association for International Cultural Exchange. The College of Northeast Asian Studies invited Professor Lee Min Gyu, a researcher at the Seoul Institute in Korea, to deliver this wonderful lecture, which was hosted by Professor Xuan Chunji of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Xuan Chunji, on behalf of Prof. Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, extended a warm welcome and high appreciation to Professor Lee Min Gyu.
Professor Lee Min Gyu graduated from the School of International Relations of Peking University with a Ph.D. in Political Science. He is an expert in the field of China-Korean relations and has long been concerned with international relations and Sino-Korean cooperation in Northeast Asia. He is currently an advisory member of the Korean Presidential Policy Planning Committee.
In his lecture, Professor Lee reviewed the achievements of China and South Korea in the past 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations and the changing trends in the relations between the two countries. He analyzed the factors influencing the Sino-Korean relationship from both internal and external perspectives, with historical and political developments and exchanges between the two countries as internal factors influencing the relationship, while various initiatives by the United States and North Korea have added many uncertainties to the Sino-Korean relationship. He also looked forward to the future development of China-Korea relations, saying that China and South Korea should establish a crisis management program, shift from "seeking common ground while reserving differences" to "seeking common ground and resolving differences", understand each other and ensure stability in the Northeast Asian region, and then promote exchanges and cooperation among all parties.
During the question and answer session, all the students who attended the lecture actively asked questions, and Prof. Kim answered them wholeheartedly. At the end of the event, Professor Xuan Chunji said that Prof. Li's lecture and his research series are of great value and have helped the faculty and students of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University to clarify their research ideas and discover new research perspectives.
