High-end Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies— “The Role of the Russian Far East in the Belt and Road Initiative”
On September 23rd, 2021, Andrey Gubin, Head of the Asia-Pacific Center of the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies and professor of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), Russia, delivered an online keynote speech on “the Role of the Russian Far East in the Belt and Road Initiative” at the invitation of the Northeast Asian Research Center and the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. The lecture attracted teachers and students of the college in the fields of international politics, regional economics and world economy. Professor Li Tianzi presided over the symposium, and Professor Xu Bo served as the on-site interpreter.
In his lecture, Professor Gubin analyzed the development issues of the Russian Far East, regional cooperation between the Russian Far East and China, and the status quo and prospects of the cooperation between the Russian Far East and China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative. He pointed out that China and Russia have economic complementarity and gradually have some common ground on regional threats and interests. Besides, Professor Gubin stressed that the growth of China-Russia relations will still be mainly promoted by the government far into the future, and on this basis, specific programs will be used as opportunities to further advance the docking and cooperation between the “Belt and Road” Initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union.
In the Q&A section, Professor Gubin gave detailed answers to the questions raised by teachers and students on the current development of the Far East and the Sino-Russian energy cooperation. Professor Xu Bo commented on the symposium.
This academic report is a session of the High-end Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies and also the second in the lecture series on Russian studies. It has enhanced the understanding of the teachers and students on the development of the Far East by providing a rich vein of valuable information and is of great significance for promoting the academic exchange activities between the college and Russia.
