High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies- "Purchasing Power Parity and the Law of One Price for North Korean Rice Price" Successfully Held
On September 2nd, 2022, the lecture "Purchasing Power Parity and the Law of One Price for North Korean Rice Price" of the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies was successfully held at Jilin University. The lecture was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, and the Department of Economics of Korea University and was held online due to the pandemic. The Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University invited Professor Park Cheol Beom from the Department of Economics of Korea University to deliver the wonderful lecture. The lecture was hosted and interpreted by Professor Xuan Chunji of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University and was attended by some faculty members, postgraduate students and Ph.D. students of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. At the beginning of the lecture, Prof. Xuan, on behalf of Prof. Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, extended a warm welcome and high appreciation to Professor Park Cheol Beom.
Prof. Park is a well-known research scholar of Northeast Asian regional studies in Korea, a visiting scholar of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University in China, and the former dean of the Department of Economics of Korea University, with the main research fields of finance and macroeconomics. He has published more than 20 papers in SSCI journals such as Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, International Economic Review, Economic Letters, etc.
Professor Park first introduced the content of PPP(Purchasing Power Parity) theory and the law of one price in practical terms, then analyzed the test model and its principle of PPP theory and the law of one price, verified whether North Korea's rice price follows the law of one price by using rice price data from China, Thailand & the U.S., and discussed the impact of economic sanctions on North Korea.
During the question-and-answer session, Prof. Park Cheol Beom gave excellent answers to the questions raised by the students. At the end of the event, Prof. Xuan gave a wonderful summary of the lecture and expressed her gratitude to Prof. Park for sharing his research results.
This academic lecture was one of the lectures in the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies and part of the lecture series in Korean Studies. The success of the lecture has enhanced the understanding of the issues of regional cooperation in Northeast Asia among the faculty and students of the College, broadened their academic horizons and had a positive impact on the academic exchange activities between the College and Korea.
