On December 1st, 2022, the International symposium on “Great-Power Politics and Future Development of Sino-Russian Relations” was successfully held. It was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of Russian Academy of Science (IKSA RAS), (the former Institute of Far Eastern Studies, RAS), and the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. Over 10 experts and scholars from JLU Northeast Asian Studies College and IKSA RAS conducted in-depth on-line discussions and exchanges on the topic.

Professor Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, and Professor Kirill Babaev, Director of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of Russian Academy of Science (IKSA RAS), addressed the opening ceremony successively and expressed their mutual desire to deepen high-level cooperation. Dean Wu Hao expressed gratitude to Professor Kirill Babaev and other Russian experts an scholars for their support, and he pointed out that the symposium was not only a continuation of their past cooperation but also a new starting point for future cooperation. Professor Kirill Babaev indicated that IKSA RAS attaches great importance to the cooperative relations with the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University and will actively promote the development of bilateral cooperation in more fields at a higher level.

The symposium focused on the themes of “Great Power Politics in East Asia” and “Sino-Russian Cooperation in the Evolution of Great Power Politics”. Warm and in-depth exchanges and discussions on the relevant issues were conducted by experts and scholars present at the symposium.
The closing ceremony was presided over by Wang Yanjun, Vice Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. Professor Ba Dianjun, Deputy Director of the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, and researcher Yuri Kulintsev, Deputy Director of IKSA RAS, made a summary of the symposium and expressed their thanks to the participating experts and scholars. It was pointed out that the experts at the symposium fully expressed their academic views, with the expected effect of pooling wisdom and exchanging ideas achieved, which contributed wisdom to deepening pragmatic cooperation between China and Russia.
The friendly partnership has lasted over twenty years between the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University and the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of Russian Academy of Science. This symposium is the first bilateral international academic conference co-hosted by both sides within the new cooperation framework, marking the official launch of new-round cooperation between the two sides. In future, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University and the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of Russian Academy of Science will continue to deepen high-level cooperation in academic exchanges, personnel training and international academic activities to contribute to people-to-people exchanges between China and Russia.
