The Institute of History and Culture of the Northeast Asian Studies College was established in 2001. It has a master's degree in world history, a doctoral degree authorized and a post-doctoral research station, forming a complete discipline training system. Currently, this major has two research directions: Russian history and Japanese history. The main research fields include Russian economic and social history, political history, cultural history and history of Sino-Russian relations, Japanese thoughts history, and history of Sino-Japanese relations. It enjoys a broad academic reputation.

In history research of areas and countries, we have an excellent research team with long-term in-depth research and cooperation and exchange experience in both Russia and Japan.

The graduate and doctoral students of our institute have good language foundation, strong scientific research abilities, great potentials, proficiency in English, Russian, Japanese. Many of them have obtained foreign language qualifications such as Russian language Band 8, English CET Band 6, Japanese N1, etc.

Graduate students in this major have a solid theoretical foundation, systematic professional knowledge, necessary practical skills, and correct ideological concepts. They are familiar with the development status and research trends of history at home and abroad. They lay a solid and profound professional foundation, and are able to proficiently read professional books and periodicals in foreign languages, can use scientific research methods to conduct academic research in professional fields. At the same time, Jilin University upholds the philosophy of cultivating international history talents based on professional foundation and language, implements different training models for majors and minors, and establishes a hierarchical multi-dimensional curriculum system, and emphasizes the cultivation of independent research through first-hand data and field research. The students have outstanding cross-cultural communication abilities which support them to explore the international joint training model. After graduation, the students are able to independently engage in scientific research and teaching in this subject field, or engage in related work in the actual work department.

Jilin University is one of the first institutions in China to conduct comprehensive Japanese and Russian research. With the unremitting efforts of several generations of scholars, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University has trained more than 100 doctors and more than 150 masters of history. They are striving in Fudan University, Jilin University, Northwest University and other major teaching and research institutions across China, as well as institutions such as the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the Social Security Bureau, and publishing houses. Many of our graduates have become important forces engaged in the teaching and research of world history and culture, as well as the development of education and social undertakings.
